چکیده

The ability to self regulate is a key skill in learning. This is especially relevant for open learning environments such as MOOCs. Metacognitive sca↵olding refers to computer based support is used to teach and engage users in metacognition and self regulated learning. These techniques have been found very useful in supporting students in e-learning environments. Studies in game based learning suggests game playing engage players in metacogniton as well as self regulated learning. We see great potential in applying Gamification as a form of metacognitive sca↵olding to improve self regulation in learners. Gamification can also provide a framework to personalise self regulated learning support. In this paper, we present our ideas and guidelines for applying Gamification as metacognitive sca↵olding. We will illustrate through examples of how they can be applied and discuss how these concepts can be the foundation for future work.

A Theoretical Perspective on the Inner Workings of Gamification in the Workplace

Typically, gamification intends to afford gameful experiences in non-game contexts with the goal of promoting desired behaviour. There are however many gamified designs that fail to achieve these goals and there is a lack of theory that can help to explain why some gamified designs are effective while others are not. Within this paper a theoretical perspective is proposed towards explaining the...
